title: Nobody has decided what a solo guest is worth
description: Cruise, resorts, tours, and rail all price solo travelers by the person, not the room. Here's why that model shortchanges your fastest-growing guest segment.

solo economy

# Nobody has decided what a solo guest is worth

In November 2025, Norwegian Cruise Line told analysts it plans to build fewer Studio cabins, not more. NCL invented the modern solo cabin: no single supplement, its own lounge, a waitlist most ships still can't clear. The company most associated with solo demand is now protecting load factor by shrinking the one product built to capture it.

This isn't a cruise problem. It's what happens anywhere pricing is built per person instead of per room, and cruise just makes the math easiest to see.

**The demographic isn't hiding.**

The U.S. Census Bureau counted 39.7 million one-person households in 2025, 29 percent of all households, up from 20 percent in 1975. Skyscanner's 2026 travel trends report found hotel bookings made through its solo-traveler filter jumped 83 percent year over year, with solo search volume up 84 percent globally. The guest is here, searching, booking, and showing up, across every category that sells travel.

**The single supplement is a per-person pricing problem, and it shows up everywhere travel is priced by the head.**

Cruise lines routinely price a solo cabin at 100 to 200 percent of the double-occupancy rate. Disney Cruise Line doesn't offer solo cabins at all, it charges a flat 200 percent. That's the most visible version of the pattern, but it isn't the only one.

All-inclusive resorts run the same math. Club Med prices per person, not per room, so a solo guest typically pays a 50 to 100 percent premium in high season, though the brand periodically waives it, most recently through October 30 at select resorts ([Travel Week](https://www.travelweek.ca/news/club-med-waives-single-supplement-through-oct-30-at-several-resorts/)). Escorted tour operators run into it too: Rick Steves' Europe, whose tour prices are built on two guests sharing a double room, now charges a flat, subsidized $50-a-day single supplement starting with its 2026 tours, after retiring the option to pair solo travelers into a shared room ([Rick Steves Europe, 2026 policy update](https://www.ricksteves.com/tours/policy-updates)). Luxury rail runs the same play in a sleeper cabin: Belmond's sleeper trains, including the Britannic Explorer, charge a single-occupancy supplement on a cabin built for two ([Belmond](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belmond_Britannic_Explorer)).

Four sectors, four operators, the same mechanism. Whenever the base unit of pricing is the person rather than the room or cabin, a solo guest is structurally overpriced, because the rate card was never built to charge one person for one space.

Some operators are starting to treat that as a product decision instead of a penalty. Explora Journeys is running "A Journey of One," reduced or waived solo supplements on select 2026 and 2027 sailings. [Ponant](https://www.linkedin.com/company/ponant/) waived solo supplements across more than 160 voyages. G Adventures launched Solo-ish Adventures, which drops the single supplement entirely for guests willing to share, with a "My Own Room" upgrade at roughly half the usual premium. Each is choosing to compete for the guest who's actually booking, instead of taxing them for showing up alone.

**The industry's most visible operator is doing the opposite.**

NCL is minimizing single-cabin counts across Norwegian, Oceania and Regent to protect per-cabin economics, CEO Harry Sommer told the trade press in November 2025 ([Seatrade Cruise](https://www.seatrade-cruise.com/finance-legal-regulatory/ceo-harry-sommer-sheds-more-light-on-nclh-strategy)). [Norwegian Luna](https://www.ncl.com/cruise-ships/norwegian-luna/staterooms), the newest ship in the fleet, carries just 73 Studio cabins out of 1,659 total staterooms, a smaller share than earlier ships. The company that proved the demand exists is now the company hedging against it. That reads less like caution than like treating its best solo evidence as a risk to manage rather than a category to lead.

**The mechanism, not the guest, is the problem.**

Crew-to-guest ratios, room cleaning schedules, even the insurance and fire-code math behind a cabin or a tour room are built around two occupants sharing one unit. A solo guest doesn't cut those costs in half, so instead of rounding the assumption down to fit them, operators round the price up to protect the model. That's what the single supplement actually is, in cruise, resorts, tours, and rail alike: a patch on a per-person pricing model that was never rebuilt for a guest who now books alone often enough to matter.

### How you actually win

Price the unit, not the head. If the room, cabin, or tour bus already exists and the marginal cost of a solo guest is close to zero, price accordingly, the way Ponant, Explora, and G Adventures have. Publish it as strategy, not as a seasonal favor.

Subsidize deliberately, and say so. Rick Steves didn't eliminate the supplement, it capped and subsidized it at a flat rate. That's a defensible middle step for any operator not ready to rebuild the rate card from scratch.

Say what the number means. A per-person rate card is a public statement about who you think your guest is. Right now, across cruise, resorts, tours, and rail, most of them still say "we didn't plan for you."

Nobody has decided what a solo guest is worth, and it shows in every sector still pricing by the head instead of the room. If your rate card hasn't caught up to your solo booking data, let's talk.
